The Proto collection has been designed with large, open public spaces in mind, spaces where we seek shelter. – We want to acknowledge the idea of a shelter. A place where we fele safe, that provides a refuge from an over-stimulated public realm. – this was the brief by +Halle, the Danish manufacturer of furniture for public spaces.
During the pandemic there is a greater demand for arrangements which enable intimate interactions – without the need for confining oneself to enclosed spaces, such as small conference rooms. The collection includes chairs, sofas as well as a novelty: tables and coffee tables of various sizes. They are made from oak wood, while the edge of the table top brings to mind an oval stone. The modularity of the series invites various settings, depending on the needs of the customers.
The author of the collection is a Scottish designer who lives in Stockholm, Nick Ross. – In order to get back to basics, one has to eliminate noise – says Ross. That’s why he doesn’t really look for inspiration in modern day events. – I’m very interested in ancient history of humanity and in ways in which we tried to organize ourselves and our surroundings. – he admits – My work stems from attempts to understand the basic human needs. When designing Proto, I wanted to translate the feeling of sitting in a small tent in bad weather.
