We are pleased to present another international project by Marro — our architects at Marro Design were responsible for the design of the food court at the Podium Mall in Baku. It combines a modern approach to designing public spaces with a consideration of the city’s local cultural and landscape context. The concept was inspired by, among other things, the region’s distinctive features — its architecture, color palette, materials, and the unique symbolism of the place — which translate into a cohesive, expressive space.
The starting point for the project is a color palette based on warm, sandy shades of beige and brown, evoking associations with the natural textures of stone and clay found in local architecture. The composition is complemented by accents of rich red — a subtle yet expressive reference to the symbolism of fire and the city’s dynamic energy. Arched shapes and geometric ornaments appear throughout the space, drawing on the fluid architectural motifs and local craftsmanship characteristic of Baku. The whole creates a harmonious visual identity, consistent with the shopping center’s architecture and its permanent elements.
The food court was designed as a well-organized, multifunctional space divided into three zones: a central atrium and two side sections with a more intimate atmosphere. The heart of the design is the main atrium space, which features decorative gazebos—elements that serve as compositional focal points. They not only define the space but also create a recognizable landmark and a signature feature of the shopping center.
The zones offer diverse usage scenarios — from classic seating at restaurant tables, through comfortable, upholstered seats with access to electrical outlets, to high tables for users who prefer a more dynamic way of using the space. These are complemented by small café-style lounge areas.
One of the side zones was also designed with families in mind — it is a child-friendly space equipped with a small play area, dedicated seating, and increased maneuvering space for strollers.
Planters with greenery are also a key element of the design, adding a natural touch that not only visually enriches the space but also enhances user comfort by creating a welcoming atmosphere conducive to dining.
The food court was designed as an inclusive space — a place open to a diverse local community. Thanks to modern solutions, thoughtful ergonomics, and a cohesive aesthetic, this space meets the needs of various user groups, encouraging repeat visits and fostering a positive experience of the place.
The concept incorporates furnishings from renowned brands that combine high quality, functionality, and modern design. Solutions from Polish manufacturers such as LOOPE, mdd, noo.ma, and Bejot were used, as well as those from recognized international brands specializing in public spaces, including Pedrali, SCAB, and Vondom. This resulted in an aesthetic and durable design suited for heavy use.
