Blå Station is a family business based in a former sewing factory in Åhus, on the south–east coast of Sweden, where the ocean is as restless as the brand itself. When Blå Station moved in during the spring of 1986, it placed a few furniture prototypes in one of the corners of the building. And in the beginning, before the production was up and running, it filled empty echoing rooms with art exhibits and jazz concerts. It was fun and the place became a “Station” – which the company thought was a very fitting name. Because at a station, there´s always something going on – a constant flow of change.

The second half of their name was given. Blå Station’s founder, furniture designer Börge Lindau, used the signature BLÅ on drawings – the B and the L being the initials of his first and last name and the Å representing Åhus where he had settled.

The company’s focus lies on the interiors that surround us—how they are built, how they function, and how people interact within public spaces. Questions about changing social behaviours and evolving demands continually inspire new ways of thinking. To meet contemporary needs and desires, Blå Station believes in maintaining an open and innovative mindset, guided by childlike curiosity and a firm rejection of shortcuts and apathy. Fuelled by curiosity, the search for the unexpected and the yet–to–be–discovered continues.

Blå Station’s thoughts are focused on the interiors that surround us – how they are built and how they work. How do we interact in the public space? Has today´s society added new demands? Has our way of socializing changed? There are many questions that inspire to think differently.

Blå Station has taken a stand and made its choices based on emotions and consciences. It follows eight criteria for sustainable development and furthermore, has chosen to produce everything in Sweden. It has made this choice in order to ensure each link in the chain of production follows its criteria.

The criteria are as follows:

1. Higher material quality for better furniture with longer durability.

2. Higher design quality to ensure that the furniture is modern and can remain in the market for a longer time.

3. Higher environmental awareness so that production and processes become environmentally efficient and energy consumption decreases.

4. Higher logistic environmental awareness to reduce transport.

5. Recyclable materials to reduce raw-material consumption.

6. Renewable materials to conserve the Earth’s resources.

7. Ethics & Morality so the company can be sure that its furniture is made according to the best and most honest fundamental values.

8. Last but not least, to facilitate a conscious and well-thought-out choice, all Blå Station’s production takes place locally in the Nordic and Baltic region, which benefits the product from a quality and sustainability perspective. This is an assurance that everything is made properly!
