At the New Aalborg University Hospital, a partnership between Foreningen Værdig — an association working to improve conditions for relatives in critical hospital settings, healthcare professionals, and Muuto has led to the design of three relatives’ rooms within the intensive care unit.

The initiative is rooted in the experience of Maj Kær, founder of Foreningen Værdig, as a mother and relative in critical care, where personal loss brought a deeper understanding of how surroundings can either add to strain or offer dignity and calm.

Together with head nurse Tina Seidelin Rasmussen, Maj helped shape a project that brings lived experience and clinical insight into dialogue. The result is a series of spaces designed with care for those waiting, resting, and processing — where thoughtful design quietly supports moments of pause during uncertainty.
